Questions When Ordering Custom Dry Transfers

Question

Answer

How can I save money when ordering?

You can fit as many images as you’d like onto whichever size transfer sheet you order – 8.5" x 11", 11" x 14", or 11"x 17". We suggest leaving enough room to cut around each image before application.

Do you add pre-production charges to my order?

The price you pay for each dry transfer sheet is all-inclusive. There are no extra color matching or film charges.

What's the difference between custom dry transfers and Letraset?

Thanks to technological advances, the custom dry transfers you order from us look better and are easier to use than Letraset. One significant advantage of our process is the ease of application. With rub-on decals from us, you apply blocks of text in a single step. With Letraset, you need to rub down each letter individually and take care to space them evenly.

Do you ship internationally?

We are based in the United States but are able to ship abroad. In fact, as of 2023, we offer web ordering for 17 additional countries—Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Great Britain, Italy, Mexico, Norway, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. If you are located outside one of these countries and would like to order, please send us a message or call. You can even create an account and add items to your cart. We'll take the order from there!

What is a dry transfer?

A dry transfer (or rub-down) is an image printed on a translucent sheet with a coating of adhesive on its back. When applied, this image is transferred from the translucent sheet onto another surface with the application of light pressure in a rubbing motion. Dry transfers can be applied to most surfaces that are free of dust, grease or oil and are referred to as DRY because they are applied without the use of water or solvent. A dry transfer is not a label or a water decal. After application, the transferred image appears as if it was printed directly on the item. Our dry transfers are opaque because we back the colors with white. Therefore, our rub-ons can be applied to a surface of any color without changing the color of the rub-on transfer. Our production artists can match all Pantone Matching System (PMS) colors including metallic and foils. We consider dry transfers a semi-permanent application.

Can you apply dry transfers on a wall?

Yes, you can. Sometimes, vinyl cannot be cut in the point size you want, and adhesive labels often just don’t look good in the museum or gallery. To find out more about the advantages of using our dry transfers on walls, please check this blog post.

Can you apply dry transfers on glass?

Yes, you can. In fact, dry transfers are optimal for glass because they are easy to apply and end up looking great, as they appear to be printed directly onto the surface without visible adhesive residue. Find out more about using custom dry transfers for glass prototypes.

What is the difference between dry transfers and waterslide decals?

Dry transfers offer significant advantages over water slides in a number of ways—especially in ease of application and appearance. Here is an in-depth comparison of both.

Do you do transfers for t-shirts?

No, we do not do heat transfers. Iron-on transfers are images that can be transferred on fabric by applying heat, whereas dry transfers are applied to surfaces via a pressure-sensitive adhesive and then "rubbed down." Although in most cases, dry transfers are not suitable for fabric, we did provide the foil transfers for Martha Stewart Weddings which were applied to the cover of the wedding guest book.

What are dry transfers printed with?

Dry transfers are printed with lacquer ink and adhesive so they can be applied to a number of substrates. Everything is done from electronic files, processed with film negatives, and exposed photographically. The highest quality supplies are used in our process.

Do you do multi-color transfers?

Yes, we will make your transfer in more than one color. Multi-color transfers allow you to rub down complete images at one time. We register the colors for you and provide a final transfer with colors matched and separated just like your artwork. These colors are considered "spot" colors. We can also produce 4 color process transfers (for photos, gradients, blends). However, our specialty is solid spot colors expertly matched to the Pantone matching system. If you would like a transfer with more than 3 colors, please call the studio, 212-928-7987, to order.

How do you apply a dry transfer to an item?

Applying transfers to your products is an easy, 3-step process. First, you line up your transfer sheet on your item, rub it on, and lift off the transfer slick. That's all there is to it!

We have produced custom dry transfers for application on museum walls. Clients have used them as rub-downs on prototypes, for photo shoots, custom displays, models, exhibits, and multi-color custom dry transfers for test market products.

Since we work from client's vector artwork, our process ensures a final, high-quality custom dry transfer. Your rub-on will be sharp, color matched to your specs, with no clear or white border around the image. After applying, the transferred image will appear as if it was printed directly onto your product.

How do I proceed with ordering a dry transfer?

It's easy! You can simply send us your art in Adobe Illustrator (.ai), Adobe Portable Document (.pdf), native EPS (.eps) format, or upload it on our website. Please make your artwork vector by outlining any fonts, so we don't have a font conflict, choose the color, pay online, and we put your transfer into FedEx that evening.

For customers who need artwork, we also offer graphic design services at an additional fee. To check our file requirements for your artwork, see the place order page.

How do I create outlines in my file?

In Adobe Illustrator, click on your text with the black arrow tool. This will show your text selection with a blue underline. If you have a lot of text in your file, select ALL with the black arrow. From the top menu in Illustrator, select TYPE and scroll down to CREATE OUTLINES. The text characters now have editable paths (or outlines), and the line beneath the text is gone. It is no longer text but vector graphics. We will not have to load your font, there will be no font conflict, and artwork will look exactly the same on our system as it does yours. Here is a PDF explaining this in detail.

What is included with my order?

All orders are delivered using your chosen method of FedEx shipping in as little as 24 hours. Film negatives are included in the cost of the transfer. Your transfer is packaged securely with a non-stick backing sheet and a free applicator. All transfer inks are backed with white, so colors stay true and ensure maximum opacity on dark surfaces.

What is the average turnaround time on an order?

At Image Transfers, we are very sensitive to clients' deadlines. It takes us on average between 24 to 48 hours to fill each order. However, if a client has a quantity run or multi-color artwork, more time may be needed. Please feel free to check with us for an estimate on how long your order will take.

Who are some of your clients?

We have served companies across a wide array of industries, including Alcatel-Lucent, Bose Corporation, Bulova, Canon, Classic Yacht Models, Google, Samsung, Milwaukee Electric Tool, IBM, Facebook, General Motors, Peloton, Pottery Barn, Qualcomm, Schick, Viacom and Xerox.
